Willie McGinnest—biggest Belichick fan boy on TV—brought up an interesting point. Belichick ran most of his runs out of 11 personnel, but—like McVay did this last weekend—had an extra lineman in. Buffalo stayed in its base nickel defense and never put 8 guys in the box till late in the game. This in spite of having an extra lineman that posed no threat as a skill player.
Since Buffalo never adjusted, neither did Belichick. Why change up a successful formula when your opponent is giving away the keys to your primary game plan?
McGinnest also said Belichick has a plan B game plan for when his opponent adjusts. But he doesn’t implement it if the opponent is not adjusting to his primary game plan.
Last MNF match was a great illustration of successful strategy.
This pretty much sums it up. NE saw no reason to deviate from the run when it was safer and working. Pretty incredible that they did and Buffalo let them do it.
