As much as I like to bag on mediocre to average football coaches, it’s tough to try new things when so much is in the line. But, in game theory, the head football coach isn’t like the lumberjack who merely has to cut down a stationary tree. He has to coach against 31 other minds who have as much to lose as you. So, the good ones realize this and realize they need to try new things. The better ones will try them but have no clue if it will work. The best ones will try new things but practice and stress test them until failure has been eliminated (at least at the beta level).
