Re: Bellichek vs McVay

Bill Belichick wasn’t an NFL head coach until he was 39 years old. I bet his first few years in Cleveland he probably did what was his core philosophy 90% of the time.

McVay’s last game—especially playing Noteboom, as a tight end showed to me he’s smarter than what he was the three games previous to this last one.

At some point, coaches either self reflect in a meaningful way (basically, they are actually taking accountability instead of giving lip service) or they are incapable of self reflection.

I wasn’t watching the Rams much during the Martz tenure, but from what’s described here, he seems to have been lacking in self reflection, to heck with the results.

It’s tough to learn new things. It’s tough to do what you don’t like to do. But McVay, at times has shown some meaningful self reflection. Whether it’s enough remains to be seen.

But back to Belichick, it’s clear he doesn’t care about a core philosophy other than not beating oneself and applying constant pressure in whatever way he discovers he can, (he also never has soft teams). But if it means his offense plays ‘Air Coryell’ one week and ‘Woody Hayes’ the next week, the bottom line is winning and not the accolades for being known as a clever play caller.
