I believe the rule was at one time...

October 09, 2021 11:38AM
...that any player could punt the ball from anyplace on the field at any time. A punter could start running, cross the line, and punt. Someone could catch a pass and then punt. Someone could catch a punt, return it a ways, and then punt. That was the rule about 50 years ago as I understood it at the time. There was another old rule, according to what an announcer said during an NFL game back then. If a QB tried to throw a pass from his own end zone and the pass got batted backwards, it would be a safety. I never saw such a play, but I heard an announcer claim that was the rule at the time. For some reason, that stuck in my mind. Years later, I was never able to confirm that it was indeed a rule. Obscure rules from 50 years ago? Well, there were some even more obscure rules 75 or more years ago!
