One of the more puzzling trends of the season for the Rams so far has been the lack of playing time for second-year defensive back Terrell Burgess. In five games, he’s played a total of one defensive snap.

He’s the fourth safety on the depth chart behind Jordan Fuller, Taylor Rapp and Nick Scott, a surprising development after he seemed like a player who would have a decent role coming into the year. He even played more as a rookie last season, getting on the field for 49 snaps in seven games before getting hurt.

With Rapp struggling, some fans feel Burgess could be in for some playing time. Sean McVay has confidence in Burgess but a larger role doesn’t seem imminent.

“Terrell is a guy that you want to get going. I have a lot of belief and confidence in Terrell and you want to see if that’s something that comes to life when we get back,” McVay said Friday.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement from the coach, and it sounds like this is a matter of Burgess simply not showing enough in practice to earn more reps on Sundays. It’s not as of McVay chalked it up to the guys ahead of him being too good to take off the field or Burgess’ surgically repaired ankle not being healthy enough.

It’s up to Burgess to show he can be an impact player and hopefully he can do that soon.
