First off AD has not been particularly effective vs the run game. Making him "gap in a half"--which is a BS way of saying "two gap" IMO--on early downs detracts from his strength which is quickly shooting gaps. Also he has straight run himself out of plays vs the run and it's not a new thing. SF has been doing that for years, just letting him shoot his gap then seal him out and the RB goes the other way.
Secondly the weakness of the Rams' ILB corps magnifies this. There is usually vertical space because ours don't fill well or quickly vs run action and that gives runners room to make moves in traffic. His size factors in too sometimes, where it is hard for him to see the run action through the bigger OL, so even though he can stack and shed sometimes the shed is late.
So the eventual answer is pretty clear tbh... AD is about to become a third down rush specialist. It's coming at some point and is inevitable. You know the Rams are discussing this internally, they have to be. Because they're smart and great self-scouters.
