5 predictions for Rams-Raiders in preseason Week 2

The preseason opener didn’t go the way the Rams hoped it would, losing to the Chargers 13-6 at SoFi Stadium. They’re at home again for preseason Week 2, hosting the Raiders in Inglewood.

It should be another game filled with backups and reserves for the Rams as Sean McVay keeps his starters on the sideline, but there’s still a lot to be excited about heading into this game.

1
J.R. Reed breaks up two passes
Reed was a stud for the Rams last week against the Chargers, making five tackles with one pass breakup. He could have an even larger role this week against the Raiders, and it’s reasonable to think he’ll make a couple of plays on the ball in coverage.

Reed can play corner and safety and has looked good in man coverage. If the Raiders throw his way, he’ll cause a few incompletions.

2
Raymond Calais leads the team in rushing
Calais tied for the team-high with seven carries in the opener, gaining only 14 yards on those attempts. The Rams know what they have in Xavier Jones and Jake Funk, which could lead to a higher snap count for Calais.

He was shifty and elusive in the open field despite not having much room to run. If he gets better blocking up front, look for Calais to break off a long run and lead the team in rushing.

3
Tutu Atwell scores a touchdown
Atwell got two touches against the Chargers, turning one catch into a 20-yard gain. He showed off some speed on that reception and took a big hit from Asante Samuel Jr. on his first catch, a good start for the rookie.

If Sean McVay gives him a little more playing time, he might just find the end zone. He has the speed to run by just about anyone, but he doesn’t need to score on a deep shot. He can turn a quick slant or a throw to the flat into a big gain for six.

4
Bryce Perkins tops 150 total yards
Perkins only threw 10 passes in Week 1, completing seven of those throws for 42 yards and a touchdown. If McVay opens the playbook a little bit more and lets Perkins take some shots, 150 total yards is very much a possibility.

He’ll need more playing time and a big play or two from his receivers to help him get there, but don’t be surprised to see the second-year quarterback stand out in his second preseason game. Things should slow down for him as he gains experience.

5
Jonah Williams records a sack (again)
Williams and Eric Banks each had a sack last week, doing a nice job in his first preseason game. He was disruptive and difficult to block up front, which should continue against the Raiders. I’m predicting he’ll have another sack in this one, breaking through the line from his interior spot. It’ll help if Justin Lawler and the edge rushers can draw extra blockers on the outside, but Williams is capable of beating his blocker for a sack on his own.
