I think it shows the opposite. He had to make a big show of how he wasn't intimidated, which usually means that is exactly how he was feeling. If he truly wasn't intimidated he wouldn't have been pushing things too far to try and prove himself. Whether he was trying to convince himself or everyone else, his actions don't match what a confident player would be doing.
