So many articles that talk about the Rams, the cap, the expensive vets, etc., fail to mention that this isn't the Rams reacting to a problem they had to solve. This is the Demoff-Snead-McVay philosophy of building a Championship team. It has its risks and rewards.

They PLAN on having a few high priced stars surrounded by role players.... young role players.... who likely will never see a 2nd contract with the team. But... what they do is go for TALENT, even if raw, and then develop the player over a couple of years.

As fans, we can agree or disagree with the philosophy. Only time will tell us if this was a viable approach. So far, so good.

Exactly, Rock. This is an ongoing deliberate strategy and it’s been showing excellent results ever since the Snead/McVay collaboration got underway.

Not many teams could probably pull off this delicate balancing act for more than a year or two. It requires several things occurring simultaneously.

Superb communication between FO and HC describing exactly what type of players are desired each offseason.
Great drafting with a huge assist from analytics.
Great coaching and player development.
Sensible policies that protect players health (such as no starters in PS games and ‘vet days off’).
Shrewd use of those comp picks to keep pipeline full.
Constant replacement of departing promoted asst coaches with new quality asst coaches.
Judicious decision making regarding outgoing and incoming FA’s.
A willingness (and maybe a pair of avocado sized gonads) to execute bold trades for elite type talent from time to time which cost many 1st round picks.

How many teams are out there that are consistently able to juggle those 8 items listed above? Snead/McVay haven’t been perfect, of course, but I do love their batting average.
