Here’s what McVay said in response regarding Goff.

“He’s developed himself into [one of the top quarterbacks in the game], and you know we’ve been able to work very well together over the last couple years. I can assure you, that is not going to happen. He ain’t going anywhere. And he’s just continuing to get better. He’s coachable. He’s a young guy that’s just continuing to grow. But the talent, the makeup that he has. I think one of the best traits is mental toughness.

“I mean, clearly, he’s the No. 1 overall pick for a reason. He’s got elite ability to throw the football from different platforms. He can make all the throws. But I think what really is special about him is the way that he’s wired mentally. He’s got an elite mental toughness. An extreme security in himself that doesn’t ride the wave of the inevitable ups and downs that you face as a quarterback. And I think he’s so authentic and genuine. His players love him. You look at the way that his Cal teammates, how excited they were when he was the No. 1 overall pick. You look at the way that his teammates respond to him here. And he’s just getting better and better. I mean, this offseason he’s continued to take steps, truly becoming an extension of the coaching staff. And a huge part of our success as a team the last couple years is due to his leadership and we’re so thankful to have him and I agree, Fred, it’s insane to think that he’s going anywhere. He’s stuck with me as long as I have say.”

To McVay’s credit, he admitted the mistake. To McVay’s detriment, the mistake was very avoidable. I mean, if a hack like me saw it coming, one of the best coaches in the NFL should have recognized it, too.

I don't know jack about Florio so I have no opinion about him other than I accept what other Ram fans have said about him, i.e. he's a drama queen trying to keep his spot. It's not difficult to play the contrarian role and it often brings one attention.

He was charitable and called McVay's support of Goff a "mistake." But I see more than a mistake. Here are some options:
a) McVay was just braggin up on Goff, talking some BS and making Goff sound better than he really was. Isn't that being a little deceitful? Yeah, I know rhetoric like that happens in many different fields, business, politics, sports, fishing stories, etc.
b) McVay's judgment was bad: he thought he saw "mental toughness" and "leadership" but they were a mirage. If his judgment was so bad then, can it be reliable and trusted now?
c) Goff regressed: he had those things and somehow lost them. If that's the case then isn't bad coaching part of the blame?

There are probably a couple of options I didn't think of.

Personally, I'm going with option a. I'd expect any executive leader to talk up his assets.

BTW, I fully support McVay as he has earned the benefit of the doubt. The data says he is an excellent coach.

Those are three of the many possible options. I analyze what is in front of me case by case and "benefit of the doubt" has nothing to do with being objective case by case.

Anyway, yeah, you give 3 of the possible takes on this, and there's more.

Here's one.

d) 2019 has nothing to do with this because very few if any qbs play even that well when their OLs disintegrate. So the issue is 2020. McVay is the qb coach and he and Goff are not communicating. Goff is inconsistent--some bad games, some games where they don't win without him (the hyperbole view, which is basically groundless, is that he was Carson Wentz collapsed bad. Naw Goff was inconsistent). But because there is a disconnect between qb coach/head coach and the qb, the 2 (says Wyche) needed "marriage counseling." In those circumstances it's the player who leaves, not the winning coach. And--it ought to be the case that none of these issues show up with Stafford.

What happened at extension time? When the Rams extended Goff, he had just played 2 years with an actual qb coach. (2 different guys, actually. Both very good.) According to reports on this, the qb coach was always a buffer between the head coach and the qb. So when Goff had a qb coach, McVay saw a different animal. When the 2 of them got into their "marriage counseling" type of qb coach/qb relationship, the qb got more inconsistent and the coach got more impatient. There's a lot more to it but this is all part of it.

But you know it's not insane, when that happens the ability to Move on, admit the mistake, is a sign of a true leader.
