Honestly, I think Hekker took his foot off the gas somewhat last year. It happens to most everyone at some point. He was not in the top 12 of any punting category- gross avg. (15th), net avg. (24th), percent inside the 20 (19th), or touchbacks percent (15th). PFF ranked him 25th out of 33 punters. So adding Bojorquez, no matter what they say, IS designed to be motivation for him. Hekker is incredibly talented and IF he is locked in it shouldn't be much of a competition. He's easily the best punter this franchise has ever had.
But I don't buy the idea that Bojorquez was brought in purely as a camp leg. At minimum they are putting Hekker on notice that if he has a repeat down year in 2021 he won't be around in 2022.
I agree with you and, frankly, didn't like the Rams saying he wasn't competition and that Hekker is safe. They should say, everyone we bring in is thought to be able to help the club and potentially unseat a player in front of them but in Hekker's case, Bojorquez will have to have a heck of a camp to unseat one of the greatest punters of all time.
The rams players and coaches like to say the standard is the standard and Iron sharpens iron, so lets sharpen the iron.
