Paper thin? C'mon man.
Compare us to the 9ers secondary. Or that of the Packers. There aren't a lot of teams who are stronger in their CB1 and CB2 spots. So right out the gate we're an elite team at the top two spots. Top 5 there without a doubt.
Slot is where you see us dip a bit. But slot has a lot of turnover every year, it's where teams save money because those guys are more numerous. It's easier to put a guy in the slot and make do. Also while I'm not a fan of Long either the Rams are a pipeline team now, they draft for depth and it's next man up around the studs. That's what it is whether any of us like it or not.
Rochell demonstrates that. He's not a slot dude by any stretch. He's the replacement for Williams next year.
In the pipeline/competition right now is not just Long. It's also Burgess who they took last year and who played a bit during the season. Even Deayon who has done some good things. I'm guessing the Rams analyzed these guys vs the FA options who are left (there are some solid slots) and don't see the dropoff.
If you want to criticize the CB group it's fair to say they're maybe top 10 overall. But paper thin? Hyperbole. Truth is no team can handle an injury to their top two CBs and still be a contender. Let's wait and see who rises among that slot group before we say the sky is falling.
