and don't read this as advocating for Kupp returning punts... heaven forbid... no way I want that.
fielding punts, kickoffs, is a different 'art'. To some it comes naturally and to others no. However, ALL can get better at it. Which doesn't mean they can get 'good enough', just better.
Kupp was thrown into that role with, I'm guessing, little preparation. Given a preseason practicing and I think you'd see a very different Kupp returner than we saw last year.
Best hands does not equate to being good at fielding punts, or kickoffs. I'm not sure why... but I've seen it so much I have no doubt that it's true. So we come to why I don't want Kupp returning punts, even if I believe he could get proficient at it.... no need, mostly, but also don't take some of the best hands you've got and add complexity which would without doubt take away from practice time, at least somewhat. - JamesJM
