What I find missing in the McVay v. Shanahan comparisons is the injury factor.
Shanahan gets a pass because the injury bug has hit the Niners during his tenure.
McVay gets the detraction that he’s been lucky in regards to injuries.
But I actually think the difference is due to planning versus non planning.
McVay brought in Reggie Scott and monitors his players during practice to ensure their bodies were not overly stressed and prone to injury.
Has anyone heard Shanahan doing that? And if he does now, was he doing it in 2017-2018, or did he learn it from McVay?
Also, McVay gives his older players days off during the season in the week of practice.
Anyone hear about Shanahan doing that?
Injuries do happen: Cooper Krupp, Whitworth last season and a few others. But the Rams have had way better “luck” with injuries and I don’t think it’s luck at all.
It’s planning for what is quite common in the game of football and trying to control or at least adapt to it rather than just doing nothing and hoping it doesn’t happen. The latter is an omission.
So, when people, whether Niner fans or here on this board, claim that McVay’s lucky and Shanahan isn’t, they’re missing a glaring difference in each of these coaches’ approaches to preparation.
