The J&J vaccine is only ~72% effective at preventing someone coming down with Covid (although ~86% effective at preventing a serious case).
The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are better. But you can still get it, just much less likely to actually get very sick.
And consider how sensitive the PCR test is, he could easily have been vaccinated and still have a mild or asymptomatic case that resulting in a positive test.
