McVay is starting to sound a lot like Gruden to me. The play would have worked if you had run it right.
There is another thing mixed in with this. I am not all that sure that McV has a good in-the-moment feel for the game. At times it's like he's all chalkboard.
For example, execution issues. Sometimes, in spite of everything, a certain thing isn't working. If so you don't keep running it--you think, they're off, let's get their rhythm back, so we'll do this instead. Calling plays to get confidence up when they're struggling.
The classic example is the Miami game. The empty backfields were not working. Okay. So, run the ball. Get the offense back in rhythm.
In fact the Miami game led a lot of people to think the Rams were not good against the blitz when actually they WERE good against the blitz in 2020. That game was just this snagged up aberration.
