This part of the article really caught my attention; 'But his frustration was warranted. Goff was slow to process things on the field, particularly in the seconds after the snap. He struggled to recognize coverages and blitzes, which led to turnovers and mistakes that put the Rams’ backs against the wall defensively.
McVay is an excellent play caller, but even his scheme couldn’t help Goff. It got to the point where McVay felt every call had to be perfect for Goff to succeed.
McVay told people around him he felt as though he had to call every play perfectly for Goff. And Goff felt increasingly micromanaged as McVay continuously ramped up the complexity of his offense in an attempt to outscheme the defense, a league source said.Certainly McVay could of handled this situation better."
Many on this board called out these issues regarding Goff and McVay since the super bowl loss. Goff didn't seem to progress as a QB. Being under center and reading defenses were not strengths for him coming into the NFL.
McVay being in Goff's ear before snaps for multiple seasons should have helped Goff learn to read defenses. Many thought it was too much and caused Goff to hesitate. The deep ball went away (Cooks departure contributed), but quick strikes were gone. Defenses seem to have caught up to McVay and Goff. A perfect storm. Goff looked lost so many times. The Rams had inexplicable losses and yet the Rams won many games. Goff was dependent on McVay's scheme and it became stale. So a change. Now what?
Stafford can read defenses, he's experienced and doesn't seem to hesitate pulling the trigger. I am certain that his talents will be an upgrade for McVay. The deep threat should return and I am confident that Stafford will be able to handle most anything McVay throws at him; but will he take the reigns off? Will he accept and corroborate more with Stafford? Allow him latitude to make changes and adjust play calling and approach in game? Is the offensive line sufficient?
There are no excuses for McVay's offense now. He's in the HOT SEAT!
