One necessity in trading away 1st round picks is maximizing middle and late round picks- and part of that is adding to them through the comp. picks formula. Clearly part of their strategy and I would assume they try to net multiple 2022 comp. picks yet again. That's done by (a) letting high-priced guys go, (b) signing guys released elsewhere (do not count against the comp. picks formula) and (c) minimizing free agent deal sizes otherwise.
I’m generally a huge fan of Snead’s harvesting of comp picks annually, 93.
But if we can sign a Linsley caliber C, I say do it and worry about a lost comp later. A top drawer C for 5 years playing in front of Stafford trumps a 3rd round comp pick in the following year in my book every time. This would definitely be an exception to the general rule for me.
Probably feel the same way about a hypothetical Floyd 5 year signing, too. Just too much proven value with both players to pass up IF a sufficiently creative contract leaves the door open.
The future is now as George Allen used to say.
