Like you said staying #1 (or top 3) is really, really hard, especially in a salary cap-strapped year and with potentially losing Floyd, Johnson, Hill, Fox and Ebukam.
As a TEAM, if they can stay in the top 10 defensively, though, while getting the offense back into the top 10 and special teams into the top 15 (from 30th) they would be in good position.
I think top 10 D is setting the bar VERY low, unless devastating injuries occur.
Let’s talk about that a little bit.
Assuming that Rams lose Floyd, Johnson, Hill, and even Fox, they still have a solid core at DL and secondary. Our ILB would also be the same as in ‘20, in fact stronger since Howard would be back. Not an All Pro group, but not any regression, either.
The Rams would only have to address two Edge players as starters, really. And they have trades, FA, and the draft, and possible restructuring as resources with which to do it. Any other D players brought in would probably be for depth.
I’m projecting bare minimums here, of course. A stud ILB falling to us in the late 3rd would be most welcome.
So, I see at least a top 5 D for ‘21, maybe even top 3 if Floyd or another quality vet FA is brought onboard. I’m actually feeling pretty good about our likely ‘21 D the more I think about it.
