So, here's the thing:
Jared Goff was roundly criticized by fans and analysts after Super Bowl LIII for wilting under the Patriots' pass rush pressure (in fact, it was often pointed out that he did not 'like' the pressure), and for not being athletic enough to adapt his play to counter or mitigate what New England was doing on defense.
On the other hand, Patrick Mahomes is a mobile quarterback and the type of athlete that most people say you need to overcome offensive line deficiencies, and defensive schemes that are designed to attack the weaknesses of an offense while taking away its strengths.
Mahomes didn't do any of those things and he also missed some throws and threw passes behind some of his receivers.
But, now, I hear analysts considering other things besides the play of the quarterback that contributed to the Chiefs' losing: the offensive line (where it appears that Patrick Mahomes, despite his skills of movement, also does not 'like' pressure); the defense (which didn't create turnovers or make critical stops); and yes, the officiating.
Isn't Patrick Mahomes the epitome for the kind of quarterback to which all of these other circumstances are not supposed to matter?
Wasn't this the perfect stage for Mahomes to display his wares? I mean, what is a mobile quarterback for if not for escaping sacks and making amazing throws where he's running for his life?
Or maybe there is something wrong with the way most analysts and fans evaluate the performance of NFL quarterbacks.
Points to ponder.
