So, I just talked to a good friend who is from Michigan and is a OG Lions fan. He asked me what I thought about the trade, and I expressed my concerns. He considers Stafford a very solid player, and thinks that he "should play well" for the Rams. However, he pointed out that Stafford is 33 and will never be a Rodgers, a Manning, or a Brady. He agreed with me that Stafford is probably not as good as he was 5 years ago, and that what the Rams gave up is more commensurate with an elite tier QB. He thinks that Stafford might not be that, pointing out that he's never won a playoff game, and he thinks it may be a case of a big city like Los Angeles (my friend is from Lansing) being fascinated by a shiny new object in Stafford.
I'd feel a lot better if the Rams had given up two 2nd round picks or something like that.
