those fits were often with empty backfields and a QB who could not handle the rush without help
What you're describing, IMO, does not exist. All qbs need help with the rush. Heck the Rams were giving Wilson fits before they had Donald. On the other hand it is not necessarily true that a pocket passer is always a sitting duck. Even with extensive OL issues in 2919, Goff had one of the lowest sack percentages in the NFL (ranked 3rd)--and that wasn't because of the OL. And that was with being tied for 1st in passing attempts. In 2020, some DLs gave the Rams OL fits, they just did (and I can name em off actually), but even with that, Goff was 7th in sack percentage (and only 2 of the qbs ahead of him would be considered mobile). When your offense is getting pressured but the sacks are generally low, that's on the qb.
In terms of the mobile qb idea, actually, I've seen these debates before and what I got out of them was that as a rule, the qbs called mobile get sacked a higher percentage of the time, not less. That held up this year. All of the following were sacked at a higher rate than Goff was--anywhere from a little bit more to a lot more: Prescott, Murray, Jackson, Newton, Wilson, Watson.
Anyway. I agree with R2K -- the GB game, the rush collapsed plays so quickly, it wouldn't have mattered. The GB defense knew how to exploit a weakness.
