Phil Jackson won 11 rings as a coach and he would light a fire under the bottoms of players at strategic times and he got results.
Was he self serving? I guess if you call wanting to win self serving.
Bill Walsh—whom I would assess as McVay’s mentor—did the same thing.
Players have pride. And when they’re not being ogled and coddled and complimented by the boss and actually questioned, then they either wilt or they elevate their game to the next level.
Before this season many of us were hoping that Jared would elevate his game. Well, some games he did and other games he did not to such an extent that the losses were his direct fault.
I know it would be amazing if we all could motivate people by telling them that they’re good enough, they’re smart enough, and people like them. But that’s not the world we live in. Sometimes to push people to their capacities, you have to potentially take something away.
Well, McVay is doing that. He’s potentially taking away the starting quarterback job of the Los Angeles Rams from Jared Goff. Let’s see if Jared Goff is of a mind to keep it.
