In ‘19 Staley was a LB’s coach.
Has had a fabulous rookie season as DC, but there was already a very good D player roster which he inherited. I give him a ton of credit for bringing in Floyd and promoting Williams, of course, plus expanding Ramsey’s assignments. But it’s not as if the D cupboard was bare, you know?
If he were my own son I would advise him to do the interviews just for the experience but to accept a generous raise and stay with McVay for at least one more year. What better learning experience and opportunity to pad the resume is there in the whole league. THEN he would be in position to pick and choose from the very best job opportunities that would be available in ‘22 or ‘23.
Look at how well that worked out for LaFleur in Green Bay and how poorly for Taylor in Cincinnati. This factor is critically important for a 1st time HC. Can’t be overstated.
