I haven't re-watched the game so I'll try by memory.

On 1st and Goal, Van Jefferson was at the top of the screen. The CB was playing so off Jefferson, I was hoping Goff would just throw a quick pass to him. It would've been easy pitch and catch.

It's unclear to me how much flexibility McVay allows Goff to freelance, so I won't criticize him (Goff) for not taking that opportunity.

But on the flip side...

Based upon what I've seen of Goff this season, I've absolutely NO CONFIDENCE that: 1) he would have even looked if that wasn't the primary option; and/or, 2) even IF HE HAD looked, that he would have processed the CB's positioning and connect the dots that VJ was open - well, not before the play clock would have run down.

On 4th and Goal, I would've just run a QB sneak again. Odds are they would not have been able to stop that twice. As soon as I say Goff handing the ball off, I knew we were doomed.

But don't you see? This is where McVay is in a no-win situation. They had runnthe QB sneak a play or two earlier and failed. No harm in not converting on the play, but what happened during it? Goff FUMBLED THE BALL (ruling on the field) and was damn lucky there was no clear evidence that disproved a Ram recovery (I sure as heck didn't see it). But that's beside the point. But was is (and I'm sure WAS) the point was that with that fumble, McVay couldn't even trust Goff not to screw up a QB sneak! If he (McVay) had called the same play and Goff had fumbled again, we'd be saying, "Why on earth did you call that play again with butterfingers under center?" Literally a no-win situation when you don't trust your QB to pass or run in high-leverage situations.
