McVay can't rest his starters in week 17 against the Cards.
The assumption going in is that the Rams win their next 2 and neither the Saints nor Packer lose to an NFC team the next 2 weeks. In that case, the Saints play @Panthers and Packer play @Bears in week 17, and if they both lose the Rams get the #1 seed if they beat the Cards.
McVay has to play to win in week 17, regardless.
I don't think he will ever do that agin considering what a disaster it was in 2017
