Is that we didn't have the interior OL play that we have now. So when a team stacks the outside edges to take away that zone bread and butter we couldn't do what we should do which is attack that soft underbelly with the run.
And of course Gurley was not exactly running hard. The guy was going down from minimal contact (compared to normal) in games where his knee was bothering him.
What McVay has done is build an offense that can run it up the gut now. They can run outside zone, inside zone, power/duo, etc with good results. Not dominating but capable of different styles of run game and with Akers in there they may develop a very strong rushing attack.
It's a tale of two completely different teams IMO. Which allows McVay to approach the games differently. Not exempting his Super Bowl performance however many of his issues were personnel being exposed by Belichick's scheme and that excellent defense.
