Re: Better to finish 2nd than win the West?

November 27, 2020 02:30PM
The author is only looking at the first week, but the NFC playoffs are three weeks long.

If the Rams are the #2 seed and they win the first week they will be home again the second week (with a shot to host the NFC Title game if they win and the #1 seed loses.)

If the Rams are the #5 seed they travel to the #4 seed in another of what seems like an endless stream of East coast trips (assuming Philly, NY, or Washington wins the East). This time, though, it will be January 9th or 10th. Could the weather be a factor? As compared to the weather in LA? THEN the Rams have to go on the road again the next week ... unless both the #2 seed & #3 seeds lose. So all three division winners would have to lose on the first week of the playoffs in order for the Rams to play at home the second week, otherwise they're headed to NO? or GB? or SEA? (Note if #2 beats #7 and #3 beats #6 then the Rams would go to the #1 seed in the second round ... after they had a bye.)

Bottom line:

The #2 seed is at least 2 home playoff games with an outside shot at hosting the NFC title game.

The #5 seed is a series of undesirable road games.
