Arians loves the deep ball. That's never been Tom's game even when he was younger.
And here's something no one is talking about. The reason Brady is no longer a Patriot is because he has been collapsing against pressure for the last several seasons - at least two. Father time is catching up to him. If he was still performing as the Brady of old the Pats would have kept him.
So what we have is a QB who has always preferred surgically dissecting a defense with short to intermediate stuff, who was never mobile but getting less so given he's 43, and who's been severely declining under pressure. You put that QB in a new offensive scheme that calls for deep shots every other play and are surprised at the result? Against a Rams type defense that can get pressure and cover, last night is what we should expect Brady to look like.
All the responses in this thread are really, really good but this one is exceptional. I wish to take your perspective to another level.
Brady, Brees, and Manning were the ultimate system quarterbacks. Their command of their systems were elite. Their teams were incredibly well coached on both sides of the ball. With that said, they were never the creative geniuses of Mahomes, Favre, Wilson, Tarkenton, and Vick. It's a matter of personal preference which style you prefer.
With that said, while Brady is coupled with a bad fit in Arians, Goff is developing still under McVay and took a leap forward on Monday night. This was a significant response to what defenses have been doing the last two years as the book on stopping the Rams has become stacking against the run, getting free runners to the QB, and sitting on the short and intermediate routes because there won't be time to go down the field.
If anyone really believes McVay didn't prefer to run it down their throats, they aren't paying attention. But to his credit, if the run isn't there, you have to do something else. If the Dolphins game made McVay flinch and abandon empty sets for the rest of the season, defenses would've had the blueprint going forward.
Goff was pushed to expand his game with quick reads out of the shotgun. Mission accomplished. The offense had to develop this wrinkle beyond a handful of plays. While we saw a few powers and traps from the run game, there weren't enough of them as the stretch zones were totally shut down.
But, hey, it's taken time to revamp the offense and there have been frustrating stumbles along the way. I called this multiple expansion before the game but didn't expect McVay to have the cajones to implement it vs the Bucs. I was so wrong. But there's still work to do. The basis of the offense has a zillion reps while the shotgun set is in its relative infancy.
What we are witnessing here is the transformation of McVay's offense from being great at one scheme to becoming one that can pivot to another if the matchups so dictate.
BTW, sorry to hijack a Brady thread to focus on a pivotal moment in Ram history. It's just that the media is still generally slobbing Tom's knob in defeat while the real story is how the Rams truly dominated both the Bucs and the refs. Okay, I lied...not sorry.
