Also, I think he wanted the Bucs to burn another time out and didn't want to risk an incomplete pass.
Good point. I was upset at the time, but in hindsight, he played it right. Take the points. Make them use a time out. Trust the D.
Worked out great. I'm fine this year with decisions that are made on the basis of trusting the D.
... I still don't like the call. That run went nowhere and it wouldn't have been even reasonable to expect it to go anywhere.
The kicker had already missed a 44-yarder.
Are we really saying we think McVay had more confidence in a new kicker who had already missed from roughly the same part of the field than in his veteran QB NOT to throw an int there, take a sack, or otherwise have a bad outcome? Goff hadn't been sacked and we can argue about whom to blame for the ints. But you REALLY ought to ogive your offense a chance to get the ball at least a little closer and maybe get a 1st. (The burned TO was close to meaningless; there was tons of time on the clock.)
Confidence in the D is fine, better than fine. But regardless of how that Rams' possession ended it was going to be a 1-score game (or a tie) and the D would be called on. Wold have liked to see McVay show some confidence in his O too.
