It was smart to kick the FG rather than trying to get a little closer (and waste precious time in the process). If they had gotten the on-side kick, that strategy might have paid off. The decision to kick the FG when they did was the only sensible thing to do in terms of the simple math of the situation. It is amazing how often NFL coaches don't seem to understand simple math. So I must give Pete Carroll credit in that situation for making a decision that many other coaches might not have considered.
