Football is a human industry. Humans will not always fulfill our hopes that we place in them. Sloman is a human.
More draft picks will not make it in the NFL than those that will.
Besides, Kickers are an odd breed. They can be successes that become failures and vice versa. That can have the attributes but not the on field performance to match.
They can be like baseball players that have nearly alternating great years with not so great years.
I think the Forbath issue is also interesting. If I have the stats correct, Forbath has not missed a kick from any range in the last 2 seasons that he played. So why would a team with a kicker that reliable cut him or not re-sign him (the grass is always greener scenario)? Plus his Touch Back rate was 65%. Not great, not bad. Maybe he wanted more money than the teams would pay or something. But otherwise I don't understand it.
Looking at the Sloman and now the Forbath choices, and letting GZ go, I think the priority for McVay shifted. He isn't as interested in the 55 yarder to win the game; it is the mid range and PATs that matter more to him. I don't think except in a wing and a prayer situation with time running out that we will we see McVay going for long FGs because the result of missing is such good field position for the opponent.
I think he wants a guy who is money from about 45 yards on in . GZ wasn't that guy, but his leg strength did give him the possibility of winning a game from 60+ yards without kicking at low blockable trajectory. Forbath probably doesn't have that leg strength.
