To me it was a faulty assumption. After the issues the niners had with the Dolphins it was guaranteed that the Niners would employ the same gameplan we did at the beginning of the year, because of our suspect OL, quick passes and lean heavily on the running game. Yet the Rams Defense was unprepared for the first drive where the Niners basically ran it down our throats with a little dink and dunk mixed in. Now on offense it seems that the Rams were being bated into going pass heavy, because the niners looked so bad against Fitzmagic (they were down a starting cb against the phins that was active and healthy against us). Without the heavy run game, it appeared that our passing game wasn't clicking as well. There were a couple of wide open receivers that were missed (Kupp drops) but in general our usual scheming our receivers open wasn't working as well as it typically does. Probably because the niners defense is used to practicing against a very similar offense every single day.
