By deciding NOT to follow the lead of the Pac12 and a couple other major conferences, the SEC and the ACC are going to really help themselves. They are going to be on national TV probably every Saturday, and are going to get nearly all the attention of the media. Recruits will not be seeing the teams play that many planned to go to; instead they'll see other schools. And kids being kids............
Further, if you've been recruited by the Pac12 or one of those other schools opting out, can you rely that they'll even have a season NEXT year? Heck no. Further, the rules will likely allow seniors another year of eligibility which will take up roster spots freshmen were hoping for.
I'm not making a value judgment on who is right or wrong to make that decision. I'm saying that pragmatically those schools opting out are going to pay a short and long term price for their decision. And, providing Covid doesn't go crazy on their teams, those schools that play are going to benefit both short and long term.
