SJD is underrated among the faithful IMO but he is a good run stuffer. He was a big part of our run defense improving from T-26th (4.8 ypc allowed) in 2018 to T-8th (4.1 ypc) in 2019. It was a significant improvement for the unit and isn't discussed much tbh.
The approach they took is interesting though. Adding Robinson gives them quality depth at all 3 DL spots. He might beat out SJD (although I do doubt that), either way though the team benefits from the improved depth and competition. But they also have Gaines going into year 2 and he showed pretty well in limited looks too.
They are particularly stout now in run stuffers. And I do think that shows some intent on the part of Staley not to mention their decision to spend their cap space on another DL vice an ILB (there were some options on the market).
But again I see no reason to crown this defense as a top ten unit right now. Or to act like it's a projection that makes sense. It doesn't to me right now but I sure am eager to be proven wrong.
