one of the "basics" of gradients that help give a 3D look to objects.. At work we do 99% of our stuff in 3D Max and makes 3D models for everything, but for several years, we didn't use Max and had to figure was to make 2D objects "appear" to be 3D.. This was one of the techniques I came up with for cylinders and stuff.. lots of other techniques for other applications..
Plus, as I tried to show, get the gradients correct and you can remove the boundary lines - or the gap in our helmet's case..
