by then there will be a vaccine or major herd immunity
The medical community stresses that herd immunity from covid-19 will require a vaccine. That is because hoping or waiting for natural immunity just from many people getting sick and recovering would kill hundreds of thousands of people.
There's 2 ways to achieve herd immunity. One is from just people getting sick and getting over it. That's called natural immunity. As I said the medical community warns that the toll from doing that would be too high, and on top of it, there's troubling evidence out there that people can get this again after having had it once. The other way to achieve herd immunity is through vaccines. Which of course they're working on. That's what the medical community backs--vaccinate enough people and you end up with herd immunity and the virus has nowhere to go.

Herd immunity is the only way the coronavirus pandemic will end — and it would require a vaccine.Herd immunity is likely the only way to end the coronavirus pandemic. It happens when enough of the population becomes immune to the virus, either through vaccination or infection. Pursuing herd immunity by allowing the virus to spread, rather than through a vaccine, would lead to hundreds of thousands more deaths. Plus, some evidence indicates that a recovered person's immunity [to covid-19] may not be permanent.
