what position is "safe" from injury to reward with great production? What if Henderson goes off for the next couple years...going into his final year, but he has not had any injury issues....he goes for 12-15 TD's a year and at least 1100 yards a season? What if (God forbid) AD goes down and never returns to form? same for any one on the team.
IMO it's more about rolling the dice...any one you give the money to before they are due is a crap shoot....If you wait for the final year and let that lapse you will lose them...if you pull the trigger early you save yourself the worry of losing them...IF they stay healthy it works out well.....IMO it's all about keeping your special positions into perspective...allowing the drafted guys replace those special guys to an extent, so you don't end up with like 4,5,6 guys that are due and your money is in like 3,4 other guys. IMO that's really a tough job that I would not like to be in charge of.....easy to sit back and say this or that if you aren't the guy making the choices.
A team must be willing to let guys on the upswing leave...save the contract money and have a solid draft group to replace those leaving...keeping your money invested in drafted players that cost less for that 3-4 year period....keep a core like an O-line....a QB of course and pick and choose from there but always make sure you replenish from the cheapies...the rooks.....IMO that's a hard damn thing to work....
