The WR Position

We need to produce more explosive plays on 1+2 second downs thus avoiding 3rd down entirely. With Cooks a huge question mark and actively being shopped, and Kupp and Woods free agents next year--we need serious WR help. Our offense is not producing explosive plays like it had in 2018. Other than the massive gapping hole at MLB(bang head on desk and dream about days past with Littleton as my MLcool smiley WR is our biggest most valuable to fill need. If a Jalen Reagor or Brandon Aiyuk or (my heart be still) a D Mims is available we should definitely pick the WR.

Many speak about the issues with the run defense and the run offense. Both of these issues in my opinion are a function of the passing offense. Last year, our deep passing stats were 18/63 595 yards 1 TD, 4 INTs. Whereas, in 2018 we were 29/71 975 yards 9 TD, 5 Int. That is 400 yards and 12% drop in completion percentage. Our offense lost the big play, and the lead. In 2018, we had a 7 point of more lead for 330 offensive plays in 10 games. Contrast that with 2019 where we had 216 plays in 8 games. We took a 7 point or more lead into the 4th quarter 10 times in 2018 and 7 times in 2019.

We lost the explosive plays in our offense.

3rd Downs

41.2% 91/221 2019
44.9% 88/196 2018

We saw 25 more 3rd downs in 2019

1+2 down conversion % (avoiding 3rd downs)

27.9% 243/871 2019
33.5% 297/886 2018

54 times more we converted a first down or scored without needing 3rd down in 2018
This stat is super valuable when looking at the efficiency of an offense. Year after year I am finding teams high in 1+2 down conv high in offensive points scored. Which is intuitive and shows you how it is more important to avoid 3rd down than to be good at converting 3rd down.

Avg Yards per Play 1+2 downs

5.5 2019
6.5 2018

We earned a whole yard less on 1+2 downs

Plays 10+ yards 1+2 downs

186 2019 36 run / 150 pass
223 2018 56 run / 167 pass

We lost 37 plays of 10 yards or more on 1+2 downs.

We need to produce more explosive plays on 1+2 second downs thus avoiding 3rd down entirely.
