maybe not on the particular play, since it was only 2nd and 5, but you are always better trying to get first downs than to run it and punt it.
Now, with the 49ers offensive line, they are in a rare situation where they could possibly get first downs even when the defense is sitting on the run, but I like the previous post where a better way to look at this is how the aggressiveness of the Chiefs worked out versus how it didn't work out for the 49ers.
The results over the year on a percentage basis is overwhelming that more games are lost by running the ball with a lead than playing it straight up. Not saying that you can't run, but your focus should be more on continuing to move the ball versus burning 2-3 minutes on 3 and outs with unsuccessful runs that have little chance for success.
In this case, the 2nd and 5 was a good down to run and since it didn't work, of course, you can question it, but I always like the coaches that close out the game versus trying to hold on by the skin of their teeth. This is why Belichek was the greatest coach and I will always salute him when he went on the 4th and 1 against Manning even though it wasn't successful on the other side of the field.
I like the poster also pointing out going for the 2 4th downs and how Philly played it so aggressive in their superbowl win.
