We’ll probably never know all of the details about how McVay became aware of Staley.
But we can reasonably deduce several things.
McVay has probably been considering who to select to be Wade’s replacement for a year or more. That’s what smart executives do, they plan ahead and maintain lists of names of future potential candidates.
McVay likely has an extensive network within the NFL community that helps him keep up with rising coaching stars.
McVay was probably seeking a youthful and aggressive DC that was thoroughly familiar with the 3-4 system. One that was extremely adaptable and one that had demonstrated skills as a teacher of players in areas of previous responsibilities.
McVay was apparently a huge admirer of Fangio, and Staley was a valued Fangio protege.
So, while armchair GM’s like yours truly had never even heard of Staley, McVay was all over this and in approx one week finished his due diligence and pounced. Might seem like a snap decision at first glance, but I think that this was really the result of a year long back burner process on McVay’s part.
I’m gonna trust McVay on this one.
