It had nothing to do with caring or not caring. He was not the same physically in 2016.
You could tell by watching and key stats support this.
Granted the OL was a mess in 2016 too, but, Gurley was not the same. He had lost weight, he lacked explosion and strength, he (according to his own words) had delayed off-season work outs by a month or two...
.and so yeah when McGinnis said he was not healthy in 2016, that is by far the best explanation.
