It just depends on what you're trying to accomplish. With both Martz and McVay it isn't simply about moving the ball or scoring points. What they are both failing to do is help the defense. When you run the ball and sustain drives and wear down the other defense, those are all benefits to committing more the running game.
Yes, passing all the time can lead to yards and points but it isn't necessarily the way to win games. Just as "balance" isn't as important as unpredictability. Those first two drives were killers and I think everyone knew they would come back to haunt the Rams. Getting two short fields and going 3 and out and settling for FG's was just bad playcalling.
McVay is no longer surprising defenses and it is hurting the team. Hopefully he figures it out and gets them back on track.
