Yes...but not 3rd down conversions or points. Having a lower YPA is an adjustment to pressure. That means when the pressure decreases the production will increase.
Teams are beating them up but the Rams work against that and come out fine.
So what will it be like when teams can't beat them up as easily.
It sounds to me like you're agreeing that the OL is a problem right now but feel confident that it will get better. Is that accurate?
I agree with Max that if there is a ton of pressure but low sack numbers, that is a credit to Goff. And my eyes tell me that he has noticeably improved in avoiding the pressure.
I would say I pretty much agree with that.
They are taking pressure at a high rate. That's indisputable I think. Numbers aside, we can see it.
BUT.
There's qualifiers.
* I agree with you about Goff. He's not playing his best yet he is more active in the pocket and they are keeping sacks reasonably down. They are decent in 3rd down conversions and in points. They own the 2nd halves of games. So in spite of being under heavy pressure, they are taking the punches and staying upright.
* They are actually running the ball. Just not in the 1st quarter. If you take TG and MB combined and do their numbers in the next 3 quarters, they are averaging 5.15 a carry. Taken in itself as a number that would rank 6th in the league.
So what I see is that they are a bit out of sync, and facing completely unexpected defensive fronts (according to VB not one of the 3 teams played the defense they expected, Rams had to adjust).
And barring injuries, this starting OL will improve as a group. So they're winning while hobbling in mud, how will they play when they are running full speed on solid ground?
...
Good post. I particularly like and agree with your last sentence. My thoughts exactly.
What I find the most interesting is the part that none of the 3 teams played the defense they expected. That's exactly what the Pats did.
The common takeaway from the Pats defensive domination in the SB was that teams should play the 6-1. It seems teams may have learned something in addition and entirely different than that on how to stop our offense.
I'm wondering if the plan from opposing DCs throughout the year will be to play a different defense than we expect whether that's a 6-1 front or anything else.
Basically, is this the year where they test our QB on his ability to diagnose what he's seeing and our head coach on his ability to adapt what he's doing and prepare the team for everything?
There is definitely some 3D chess going on.
