Much of what Plaschke says here is true. But there is more to the story.
As we all know, the OL is not as good as last years, especially early on. That puts more pressure on McVay's play calling and Goff’s performance. Just adding another degree of difficulty to solving the 6-1 defense that stymied them last year.
Statistically, the scoring numbers are down. But another statistic that is eye opening is the lack of explosive runs. Gurley hasn’t had any long runs in a very long time. And no one is afraid of Brown ripping off a big run.
So defenses are no longer afraid of the Rams running game. It’s all on McVay and Goff to fabricate explosive plays behind a weaker OL.
Added to this is the issue of where’s Henderson? He was supposed to be the speed back that added another dimension to the offense. Homers say he can’t get on the field because Gurley and Brown are so great, but that doesn’t fly when you look at the stats. VinnyB said Henderson needs to mature, learn to be a pro, and learn the playbook. That has got to be at least a bit disappointing to the Rams.
Will all these issues get resolved and if so when?
Right now, the burden of this offense falls clearly on Goff’s shoulders. That was nowhere near the case when he was lighting it up last year before the bye.
I expect Goff to get better, but despite the fact that he has a wonderful receiving corps, he isn’t good enough to carry an offense with the rest of the current supporting cast.
