I wonder if it's more pain tolerance than say swelling. With swelling you really see the functionality of the knee compromised as opposed to the arthritic condition being painful but not restricting motion.
I have had problems with my knees for years. Had my left replaced in 2017 and been living with a right knee that is bone on bone for the last 18 months.
very painful but the range of motion is fine, just hurts like heck. But there are times when I am walking around and I even forget it is as bad as it is until a bad
step reminds me. Funny thing is when I would hurt it before it would swell up and I couldn't use it. I would limp around at work, wearing a heavy brace until the swelling went down.
I've heard before that a lot of it is pain tolerance. You personally have my sincere sympathies. I suspect though that Gurley's situation is at a much earlier stage and/or is a lesser thing than you describe. I don't know though, obviously.
