Fair enough. I've learned that we are better at recognizing other peoples mistakes than our own. I think I got that from Daniel Kahneman. Ever read his book, Thinking fast and slow?
Anyway, we are probably both wrong.
Fisher's offenses were in steady decline for years until they became inept. He was a dinosaur in that regard. If one just looks at the success his QB's had after leaving him and what Goff did once he wasn't saddled with him it's easy to rightfully lay blame at Fisher's feet. Fisher was not completely flawed but his ideas and implementations of the offense were historically bad and indefensible.
Steve Martin had series a of made up book titles, one of which describes Fisher and his approach to offense. "How I turned a million in real estate into $20 cash".
It certainly looks on the surface that Fisher was that bad. To zn's point I do wonder if it’s that easy. Something bothers me about it.
In the end, all that matters is that we’ve got a great young HC now, and it’s quite unlikely that Fisher gets another HC gig in the NFL. The rest is all worthless blather.
I don't think it's worthless to have a conversation. But I do find it difficult to rationalize Fisher's putrid offenses as anything other than him being the culprit. You can look at it from any and many angles and it all leads back to Fisher. Bradford, Keenum, Foles, Goff...all markedly better without Fisher. Rams o-line was constantly injured under Fisher, McVay's first year he turns them into the rock of Gibraltar. Receivers were downright pathetic. McVay puts together arguable the top unit in one offseason. His lack of aggression on offense. His refusal to modernize his passing game. His unwillingness to hire competent coordinators for the offense. Going without positional coaches at times. I mean, the list goes on and on.
This wasn't a fluke year of bad luck and a series of circumstances that no coach could foresee or work around. Fisher was not all bad and did take on and actually manage to turn the culture of the Rams in the right direction. He had some pretty good draft picks. But utilizing those picks and consistently producing a legitimate offense were both things that he was primarily responsible for and monumentally failed at.
