There is a definite pattern to the annual QB signings for franchise QBs. A point or two difference in QB ratings doesn't mean much in the end. Franchise QBs are not common, sort of the prime rib in your grocers cooler. The price is the price. If we were fans of any other team in the NFC west rather than Rams fans, I think many of us would look at Goff differently and be able to see the extremely high value he brings to McVay's offense. He is "franchise" so no matter how many QB ratings points he is behind Wentz, which I think is about 1 or two points below Wentz's 102, Goff's next contract will set a new record. After all, he has actually played in a SB.
I think that's all correct with this one addition: basically everything you say applies to 2nd contracts.
Beyond the 2nd contract, it's not as regularized or stable. You can see both exceptionally high and much lower deals.
That's why when we talk about guys like Wentz and Goff, really, it only has to do with the 2nd contract market. Bringing up Wilson or Brady or Rodgers, like some reporters still do, just confuses things.
