In terms of effective APY (meaning old plus new money) Wentz is at an average of $25.8M. That ranks behind Wilson, Rodgers, Roethlisberger, Ryan, Cousins, and Garoppolo. Thats the benefit of doing a rookie extension with two years left.
That's not real though. When you do the value of an extension, you take the second contract in its own terms. You don't add it to the existing contract and then divide by the bigger number. The extension is 32 M a year. That is determined just by looking at the extension itself, as a separate contract.
Also this contract has nothing to do with Wilson, Rodgers, Roethlisberger, and Ryan. Those guys are not on 2nd contracts. There's no real rubric out there for "what qbs get." Qbs on rookie contracts get a certain amount, 2nd contracts for franchise qbs are a certain amount, veteran 3rd and 4th contracts are their own separate thing yet again.
Cousins and Garoppolo ARE on 2nd contracts. So that's a valid comparison. And if you do it right and compare the value of Wentz's extension in its own terms, he got more than them. They got around 28 M in 2018. Wentz a year later gets 32 M, at least in part because the 2nd contract does not start until 2021 and qb 2nd contracts will be more than 32 M by that point.
