Rams undecided on who will be defensive signal caller

The Los Angeles Rams made several changes on defense this offseason, having to replace Ndamukong Suh, Lamarcus Joyner and Mark Barron. There are some things that still have to be determined – like who will step up in Barron’s place and where Clay Matthews will play – but one more change could be coming.
Cory Littleton enjoyed a solid 2018 season, his first as a starter in the NFL. He also took over signal-calling duties from Alec Ogletree, who was traded to the Giants last offseason. It was a lot to ask of a first-year starter, but Littleton took it all in stride.
He’ll be a starter again in 2019, but he may not be the signal caller on defense. That job could go to Eric Weddle. Dan Pompei of The Athletic says Sean McVay told him the Rams are undecided on who will wear the green dot as the player who relays calls from Wade Phillips to the rest of the defense.
For most of the 2018 season, Weddle was the Ravens defender who wore the orange earpiece that enabled him to hear the defensive play call from his coach. He enjoyed the responsibility and was good at it.
The earpiece goes to the middle linebacker on most teams, and last season middle linebacker Cory Littleton wore it for the Rams. He wore it well, but McVay says there is a chance Weddle will get it this season. The decision has yet to be made.
The player who wears the green dot typically doesn’t come off the field much. That’s often why the responsibility falls on middle/inside linebackers for the majority of teams. But with Weddle being as smart and familiar with Phillips’ scheme as he is, it would make sense for him to take over signal-calling duties from Littleton.
If he does in fact wear the green dot, don’t expect Weddle to come off the field much. Taylor Rapp will certainly garner some playing time as a second-round pick – and Weddle will help him along the way – but he expects to remain a starter next to John Johnson III.
“I’m going to try to give him an edge in any way I can and make a difference in his career,” Weddle said. “That’s where I’m at in my career. I’m not worried about him taking my job. If he’s better than me, then he should be playing. But that’s not going to happen.”
